Change of the seasons

Posted in current events on April 13, 2011 by Andy Rice

Hey there, hi there, ho there….

It’s been a crazy winter here on the outer banks…my first winter here…Despite the absence of people and the cold-ass wind, i fared pretty well and managed to stay pretty busy.

I taught some guitar lessons.

Unsuccessfully tried to conduct some improvisation classes…wait, let me clarify that….The classes were fun and i think we all learned alot, but they were generally poorly attended…not giving up, though.  I promise.

I have a new jazz group called “The Magnum Trio”

Still playing with Kevin in the Wilder Brothers.

Both of these groups are about halfway finished with CDs

I also have another random collection of music that i’ve been working on by myself.

I have added a schedule page to this website and it is current through May, so please check it out and come and see me.

Thanks a bunch,

I am super psyched to join the team.  Here are a couple of promotional ads that they’ve done up.  Thanks for having me!  I’m going to be doing monthly improvisation clinics and also private bass lessons and private improv lessons on any instrument.  Hopefully an ensemble in the near future.

Winter Jazz on the Outer Banks!!

Posted in current events on November 6, 2010 by Andy Rice

Hi everybody!  I am pleased to announce that we finally have some live jazz on the outer banks…well, let me clarify…in the OFF SEASON.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    The Brine and Bottle has seen fit to indulge my obsession with improvised music and let me host a weekly residence.  The cast of characters is likely to change weekly as will the set list…haven’t seen one of those in years.  I can’t say enough things about Ashley and Andrew and the great things they have going on over there.  Great food, an interesting beer and wine selection, and a cool vibe.  Add some live acoustic music and you’re in for a pleasant evening, guaranteed.  So, come out and check us out EVERY THURSDAY FROM 7 TO 10!!!           THIS GUY MIGHT EVEN SHOW UP!!!!!!

And then the dust settled

Posted in current events, tunes, video on September 25, 2010 by Andy Rice

According to my partner in crime, Kevin Roughton, last sunday’s gig was gig number 96 with 4 days off.

I played a few gigs with some other folks, so my own personal number might be slightly different.

Now the dust has settled.

Thank you to Kevin for keeping me sooo busy.

Thanks to Ed for taking me fishing and dorking out with me occasionally.

Thanks to all of the ladies in my life that keep me on my toes, you know who you are, i hope.

Thanks to all of the regulars who keep coming out and supporting us.

Thanks to all of the Outer Banks music scene for making me feel welcome and appreciated.

Stay tuned for news about improv classes and perhaps a bass clinic or two.

Also, i would like to announce my plans to do new two new recording projects this winter.

One is going to be a Wilder Brothers record of mostly if not all original material.

The second is going to be just me and my bass on every tune, which will be an interesting challenge.

If you still don’t have my Maine Mexico Mixtape, please drop me an email with your address and i’ll get one out to you.

I still haven’t finished the cover for my recital recording, but that’s on it’s way too, i promise.

Anyone know a good place to get my haircut?

Here are a couple of recent videos of me playing way too many notes with the Wilder Brothers.

The latest!

Happy New Year!!!!

Posted in biographical info, current events, Education on January 14, 2010 by Andy Rice

On December 23rd, it became official when i received official word that i had passed my recital and thesis.

I now have a Master’s Degree in Music

So, now i am available for lessons in the Richmond, VA area and the Outer Banks of NC.

Any place in between would be cool too.

I’d also like to do some lessons online for a reduced rate in order to explore what possibilities are available there.

That should be kinda fun.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions for any venues or other musicians in the area that i should hook up with, let me know.

In the very near future i’m going to post some lessons and my master’s thesis, so stay tuned!

Here is a picture of the Wilder Brothers on Halloween 2009, just to keep you interested.

Uarts Jazz Ensemble

Hi!!!

i am done Grad school and i hear about my final grades and such on 12/21, and i’d like to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge what a great experience that it was.

I did not originally want to get my master’s in jazz.  I was thinking that i wanted to pursue studies in Ethnomusicology, which is basically half anthropology and half music or the study of how a culture’s music relates to it’s society.  Anyhow, due to personal and geographical factors, Philadelphia came up on my radar, but there was no Ethnomusicology program to be found.  University of the Arts offered an M.M. in jazz studies, so i visited the place and left there with a good vibe.

When i talked to the director of the Bass department, Micah Jones, i was asking questions like:  ’what kinds of stuff do i need to play for this audition?’ and ‘what kinds of stuff does my recital need to include?’…His response to both questions was this:  ’However you want to present yourself, artistically.’  That was it.

Although i did apply to UW in Seatle, as well, my gut was telling me that Uarts was the place.  I flew home from Mexico to do the audition and it went better than expected, and my expectations were high.

I spent the last year and a half of my life getting a very intense intellectual boost and i have to say that the whole thing was well worth it.  I made some good friends, learned alot, and best of all, made some great music.

Here is some of that music.

This is an original of mine:

Prana (take 2)

Here’s an original tune written by Greg Martin:

Derya

And finally, a Tim Andrulonis original:

Slam Swingin’ (take 2)

Greg is melting.

Done and Done!

It’s been a while, and i promise to be better about posting content up here from now on…
do you know why?
I’m done all my work for grad school!!!!!!
I passed my thesis last week and my recital was November 18th, so i get my life back now.
We’re now in the Richmond area and I’m traveling down the Outer Banks to play gigs with the Wilder Brothers on the weekends.
Hopefully, i’ll be getting some students and some gigs up here soon. so, i’ve been reaching out to the locals via email to get my foot in the door. Also, going to go hit some jam sessions and crash some gigs in town soon.
So, in other news, my recital will be posted up here in it’s entirety as soon as i get a copy of it myself.
If you’re here because you got an email from me concerning teaching lessons or playing gigs, please click and scroll to your heart’s content. I’ve got a lot of stuff posted here and hopefully none of it is incriminating.

The Seuss project – Christmas 2008

Posted in current events, tunes on December 26, 2008 by Andy Rice

This year, Kirsten and I gave little Benjamin Lewis a very special Christmas gift.

First,  Kirsten purchased three Dr. Seuss books for him at Target:  The Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish and Green Eggs and Ham.

Next, one of us had the idea that we could record the books and add sound effects and music so we could be there to read with him whenever he wanted.

So, that’s just what we did.  The next three posts are the final results of that endeavor.

Green Eggs and Ham is my personal favorite.

Benjamin is  Kirsten nephew and he came down to visit us in North Carolina with his Papa Bear and Mormor.  We had lots of fun, going to the beach, riding bikes and playing music.
